First off, here's what this mascara can do for you according to the Covergirl website: Bottom line, I would not ever buy this mascara. I have used Covergirl in the past (their Exacteyes line is good), but this one is so far off the mark that I think I would have been pissed-off if I paid full price for it. I tried out this mascara and I was not really impressed. The colour was good (very black), but even with two coats my lashes did not look great. It was kinda clumpy and flakey and not very attractive. It was also really liquidy (I know, I love made-up words that end in 'y') and got all over my upper lid while I was applying it. Yes - I do know how to put on mascara, and although I do occasionally tap the side of my nose, I can't say I've ever had this issue before. I used more q-tips on my eyes than my ears that morning. It was also really, really difficult to wash off, which I absolutely hate, if I have that issue, it's guaranteed that I'll never buy it again. My lashes are precious to me, and I will not sacrifice them trying to scrub off mascara with three different products. The other really weird issue I had with this mascara was the smell. I didn't notice it when I was putting it on, but while I was driving to work, all I could smell was the mascara. A yucky chemical, petroleum kind of smell. It gave me a stomachache - great way to start the day, all told. I see a lot of these floating around the internet and especially on sites like Facebook and Pinterest. Some are just ok and some seem so amazing I can't imagine not using them. I have scoured hundreds of lifehacks and compiled a list of the ones I think are the most amazing and seem like they would actually work. I say that because some have been debunked and I haven't tested most of these myself, so I can't give you my personal opinion. I have tried to give credit, but quite a few of these are on multiple sites, so who knows who came up with them first? Click on the sitename and it'll take you to the post and maybe even more lifehacks you'll want to test out. From dedalvs: From Buzzfeed: Click here for the how-to. This is absolute genius! I am totally doing this. From How to Nest for Less: That's bloody brilliant, if you ask me! This lifehack is mentioned on most of the websites I visited. More from Buzzfeed: Click here for instructions. This looks really nice too. Most lifehacks are not visually appealing. Finally, from Life Hack: I have seen this many times on the net and on TV - truth be told, I can't do this. My sheets are kinda folded now, but nowhere near the perfection seen here. Brilliant! I am so doing this from now on. So there are a few of the most interesting lifehacks I've found. I hope I've made your life a little easier :)
'Till next time... as usual you can leave comments below if you know of any great ideas. I mentioned in a previous post my recent addiction to Pinterest. Well, one of the boards that I pin to is decor ideas involving plants. I love plants and having them around. I only have a slightly green thumb - I kill a lot of plants, but I do have some survivors. I have a terrible habit of forgetting to water my plants and then way overdoing it. I'm hoping to change that behavior - I have put myself on a schedule, so I'm watering everything every Thursday. I really hope that helps and keeps everyone alive a little longer. Especially within the mini oasis I recently created. So, back to Pinterest. I was so inspired by this pin posted by Judith de Graaff that I decided I had to have something similar myself. I do not have the disposable income to recreate it exactly, but one night I had a lightbulb moment and remembered my old desk and thought maybe I could do something interesting with that.
So I decided to turn my old desk into a planter. The irony is that all those beautiful succulents trailing down the wall and desk are what actually made me want to do this, and I was not able to find even one to add to my finished product. There are my before pictures. As you can see, the corner I was interested in sprucing up was super boring and very, very sad. Ready to find out what I did and how I did it? Here we go: Here are the tools I used: A drill (with bits for screws and for making holes) A staple gun (with staples) Duct tape Measuring tape Level Screws Garbage bags (lol - mint-scented!) (the cow pencil was used for something else but really, really wanted to be in the photo) After lugging the desk and three drawers down the stairs (valuable tip: do not wear long yoga pants when moving heavy furniture down the stairs, they are just waiting to trip you to your death), I moved everything from the corner, put up my two guys and a hook to hold back the curtain (which I will paint another time, I didn't want to wait for it to dry), put the desk into place and got to work. Here is one of the drawers. I stapled and then duct-taped the black plastic garbage bags to the inside so that when I inevitably cause spillage when I'm watering the plants, it won't seep into the wood and rot and mold. After I did this to all three drawers, I placed the lowest one into it's slot, sticking out as far as it would go without toppling over. I placed a level on one side to help me out and stacked some books under until it was level. Here is where you'll use the measuring tape; measure both sides along the edge to make sure they're the same and your drawer is straight. I thought I took a pic of this, but I guess not and I'm sure you can picture it in your head right now, I have faith in you. Once my drawer was nice and straight and level, I put four screws to hold it in place, two on each side. Before you start with the second drawer, I would suggest you place the container(s) that will house your plants in first. You may have a difficult time getting them in after. I shoved old newspaper and other packing materials in behind them, just to make sure that they stayed at the front and couldn't travel. I used a high vase and a glass jar that housed nuts in it's former life. It doesn't really matter what you use - the vessels won't be visible once it's done. Follow the same process with the second drawer. Just make sure you don't pull it out all the way. Leave as little space as possible for the bottom plants. These drawers were smaller than I expected. I used an old coffee container, it just happened to be the perfect height and shape. A word of caution: I would suggest you place your container into this drawer before you screw it in. There is less space to work with than the bottom. I almost couldn't squeeze this container in. Then I would have had to unscrew it and pull it out further. I rolled up chunks of phone book and anchored it into place. I put these little terra cotta pots in the bottom left hand corner of the top drawer because I wanted those drapey succulents to grow out of here and just hang down into the empty space. You know the ones I was talking about earlier? My whole inspiration... that I could not get my hands on. I didn't put anything on the right side because I figured I'd put a plant that grows upward in the middle drawer, and this would give it the space it needed to grow. I put a staple under each base and a little crazy glue, hoping this will keep them in place. Since this is the top drawer, I did not screw it into place. As it stands, this drawer will be closed until I find the perfect little gems I need. Then I'll only keep it open about an inch to let them grow out and leave space for the other plant below it. So here's the end of day one. It's pretty much put together and I even had some plants to add. I made a trip to the dollar store and picked up some random things to plant in, including the box. I wanted different heights and sizes and foliage to make this look interesting. So day two was really just about finishing touches. I went back to the dollar store and bought some decorative moss to cover the tops of the bottom drawers, I think it turned out great, I'm so happy with the result. You'll have to forgive the poor quality of my after pictures. Unfortunately the sun and light did not want to work with the ipad, which is how I take these pictures. Each one was either dark or grainy, so please bear with me! All in all, I had a great time re-purposing a forgotten desk that was collecting dust into a unique planter to spruce up a very boring corner of my dining room. I spent about $40 on new plants and maybe $25 at the dollar store for various supplies. Not a bad deal, I'd say. Feel free to leave me any comments... did you love it, hate it, wish the pics were clearer? Feel like trying something like this yourself and there was something I wasn't clear on? Meanwhile, I will leave you with more pics of the plants I used because they're so pretty and I am so happy I have them (except that bloody droopy succulent... I will find you!)

I finally decided to touch up my hair colour day before yesterday. Who am I kidding? It's been exactly a year since I've touched my hair. Last year I used Splat Lusty Lavender and did just the underneath hair at the back of my head. (I hope that made sense!) What I mean is that the top two thirds is still brown and the bottom third, underneath it all was dyed. Since my hair grows at a pretty decent pace, there's a good 4-5 inches of brown back there and the colour faded to a light pink, so I figured it might be time to do something about it. Unfortunately, the last few times I was in Shoppers Drug Mart (where I buy my hair colour) they didn't have Splat. All they had was the wash out stuff in the really vibrant colours I was looking for, and I really wanted permanent or even semi-permanent. I'm not sure if a year ago they were just doing a special with that brand (it was in the aisle, not on the shelf) and just decided not to carry it, or what. I did recently find out that I can get it at Walmart and Target - so I guess that'll have to do for next time!
So anyway, I figured I'd try out the Feria Absolute Platinum (since all the other bleaches looked waaay to complicated), bleach my hair and then pick a really rich red and dip dye the rest of my hair for an interesting look. And so began the single worst experience I have ever had with hair colour, and that brings us to this review:
First of all, let's begin with the warnings. There are always warnings with any hair colour, especially so if it involves bleach of any kind. If you're not careful, you can ruin your clothes, towels, counters and even burn your skin, so that is understandable. However, what I could not understand was why the conditioner had to have a warning!
Anyhow, The process is extremely frustrating. I followed the instructions, put on my gloves (which fit extremely well, and that doesn't usually happen with the gloves you get in these kits), twisted the top off the bottle and product squirted out. I have never, in 25+ years of colouring my own hair had that happen. And no, I didn't shake it first.
Next I had to empty the powder from a large, flat packet into the bottle. I think the people at L'Oreal should consider spending an extra couple of cents per package and including a funnel. Even while being extremely careful, trying to get powder from a packet to flow into a small hole while wearing gloves is near impossible to do without spillage. There's a lot of powder, too. Seemed like a never ending stream...
So next I screw on the cap, as per direction and shake well to mix the powder in. This also seemed like an exercise in futility. I shook my little heart out, and three times I unscrewed the cap to find a powder plug in the top of the bottle and inside the lid. Three times I pushed it down, resealed and shook ever more vigorously. The fourth time I said 'screw it', figured it was good enough and added the final tube of cream, which was, thankfully, easy to add. I shook it again, replaced the lid with the nozzle and set about bleaching my hair.
I do have to rave about the actual cream. Although the smell was strong (it is bleach), it was not unbearable. Actually much better than others. I have previously almost passed out from how strong some hair colour smells. This was very easy to deal with. The cream itself is very thick and has a really creamy texture that clings to your glove and hair, making the process of getting the stuff onto your hair really effortless.
I left it on for an hour and then went to go rinse it out. I did not put the gloves back on as per warnings and direction because I figured if it was really that bad, my hands were going to be the least of my problems. I was rinsing it out in the shower, and this stuff was going to be running all down my back and bum, and although I checked the box, there was no rubber suit included. Thankfully, there was no burning sensation at all, which makes me wonder what was up with all the fear-mongering about the conditioner. Maybe it mutated my DNA? But it's touching my scalp, so any way I look at it, the warnings to wear gloves while rinsing are kinda dumb.
After I rinsed the bleach and conditioner out, I lost a whole clump of hair. Considering I only bleached about a third (maybe less) of my actual hair, I'm surprised there's any left. I was seriously considering taking a picture of my drain, but who wants to see a huge clump of gross hair? So you'll just have to take my word for it.
After my hair came out of the towel, I inspected the colour. True to it's packaging, it did come out a beautiful shade of blonde. However, I am used to my hair feeling really soft after using hair colouring conditioners (I have no idea what they use, but it's awesome), and that was not the case this time. It was coarse and tangled. And in case you're wondering, I have bleached my hair before, and it was soft after conditioning. Thankfully I have that fantastic Pantene Ultimate 10 BB Creme. A little dab set thing right.
Overall, this product did what it claimed it would do, I got the exact shade I was looking for. Was the whole process and the hair loss and the coarse feel worth it? No. The market is saturated with so many other products that can give you the same results with less than half the hassle.

Fearing an early frost, which is not unheard-of here in balmy Ontario, I went out and harvested my butternut squash. I had four decent-sized ones left in my garden and only one was fully ripe, so although I would have preferred to use two in this soup, I used only the one I had. I didn't want to do the usual diced and roasted as a side dish, so I decided to try my hand at soup while reminiscing about the phenomenal butternut squash soup we ate at my brother's wedding. The end result was a little more watery than you'd expect with this type of soup, but it was quite delicious, especially with the little added crunch you get from the pumpkin seeds. You can probably thicken it up a bit by adding a second squash and letting it boil about 10-15 minutes after you add the cream. For your enjoyment, and to celebrate the arrival of my favorite season, I present you with my version of butternut squash soup. Serves 6 INGREDIENTS 1 squash 2 tbsps maple syrup 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 2 tsps salt 1 tsp pepper 1 tart green apple, peeled, cored & chopped 1 vidalia onion, chopped 5 fresh sage leaves, chopped 1-1/2 tbsps unsalted butter 1 tetra pak chicken broth (about 2 cups) 1/2 cup cream toasted pumpkin seeds DIRECTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 325 deg. (*I convection roasted*) 2) Halve squash and place cut side up on a baking sheet. Drizzle with maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and 1 tsp salt and place in oven to roast for about 1-1/2 hours or until soft. 3) Once done, remove from oven and let cool until you can handle it. Spoon out flesh and discard skin. 4) While the squash cools, heat the butter in a dutch oven and add onion, apple and sage and saute until onion is translucent. 5) Add squash and combine, breaking apart chunks. 6) Add remaining salt and broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. 7) Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Using a hand blender, puree until smooth. Add cream and pepper and stir to combine. Top with pumpkin seeds and serve with fresh, crusty bread for dipping. I don't know about you, but I love finding weird stuff online. One of the greatest places to find strange things is Ebay. I'm just starting to get into Etsy also, because some of the things on there, well, I don't know what you'd call them other than 'interesting'. I don't quite understand one thing, though: Why is turbobeeker selling so many bloody haunted dolls on Ebay? If they really are haunted... wouldn't having so many in one place be dangerous? Or maybe they house them separately? I smell a rat, but s/he's got a 100% positive feedback score! My skepticism aside, I spent a little (a little, who am I kidding?) time checking out worldwide auctions today and I found the following interesting things for your enjoyment. Item names open a new tab directly to the auction. me make you good luck wish ! ! ! - Who doesn't want a good luck wish? Apparently no one. This one ended with 0 bids... even with the low, low price of $0.01US! Maybe it was the $14.95 shipping charge that scared off potential buyers! Haunted Flying Carpet - Wow! A real life flying carpet that shrinks to pocket-size is amazing enough, but haunted to boot! But I have to ask how it became haunted... was it the yarn? The knitting needles? Is it haunted only when in use? Or only when it's small? I also think I need to ask the obvious question... $15.00 shipping for a coaster? Wiccan Pagan Haunted Jewelry Recharge Pouch Change Purse Sock 4 haunted jewelry - the title of that auction is a mouthful! This item is so versatile and so trendy, I'm sure they'll get multiple bids! In fact, I think I would like one! Triple Strength Breakup Doll - all in caps, no less. I gave you the second pic also because it clearly states that you must take a good look at the picture because it is part of the description of this complete kit. I have no idea if this is supposed to help me breakup with someone - or get over a breakup. The items in the picture aren't clear, I clicked it and tried enlarging it but no luck. Looks like a voodoo doll, some bubble bath, a little bit of weed and immunization papers. Maybe I can stab my lover in spirit then get high and try to wash away my sins? I don't see any pins though... maybe those are sold separately. Fu Manchu Mustache Bizarre Glass Charm Pendant Necklace Silver Jewelry Weird - umm... ok. The item description actually reads: "Wear your stash in style with this stunning and creative design". No, I don't think so. fickle affair cheat wife/husband check spray doubt a partner - I'm adding this one because the description is pretty unusual. They give you full instructions for using this product, but English is obviously not their native tongue. A small sampling: [usage] ① You prepare the underwear of a partner doubting a flirtation. ② You reverse underwear. ③ You cover the part between the crotch of the underwear with 5-7 times of yellowish green spray well. It goes on for quite a while... Google translate wasn't this guy's friend. Taxidermy Bat Cuff Bracelet - Show all your friends how truly unique you are! Sport a super-fashionable dead animal on your wrist! This is a real dead bat, people. Montauk and Atlantis, Rare Bone and Celestial Pendant, Paranormal - This has to be the longest description I have ever seen for any auctioned item! The seller tells the whole story of how they stumbled upon these 'one of a kind' pendants made from the bones of Atlanteans. I guess she didn't read her own story... this came from a room filled with bones - I guess they're not that one of a kind.. dead cockroach in a matchbox (funny pet or gift) - I love how this guy lists this as a pet. Just as I was about to throw in the towel for the day, a little saddened because I hadn't come across any dead animals or kidney stones, I find this little gem. I love his positive attitude! I do believe you'd get a punch in the mouth if you gave this as a gift, though. Handmade Hand Painted Angel Party Clown - creepy doesn't even begin to describe this hideous abomination! I have a fear of clowns, so this is just a little too much for me. Shockingly, there are no bids on this yet. You still have 2 hours to nab this little gem for yourself! And I will leave you there, my dear readers. I'm sure I could spend all night looking through the weird and unusual on Ebay, but I'm done for now. I'll do a post on Etsy next time... loads of weird shit people made themselves... truly inventive sometimes. A note of thanks to the good people at Ebay: Thank you for censoring the adult stuff until you confirm my age. Since I didn't log in while I was searching and they didn't have that info, I was spared many, many traumatic images, judging by the number of times I saw this while I was looking through 'everything else'. I have a terrible time finding products that work with my hair. My hair is the worst combination of all the things you could possibly find wrong with hair. It's dry and full of static at the ends, oily at the roots, falls out when I wash, condition, or brush it, and tangles if you just look at it. Let's just say I've tried my fair share of hair products over the years. Some have been okay, some pretty good and others just made one problem or another worse. Thanks to BzzAgent and the fine folks at Pantene, I received a free, full-sized set of Pantene's new Pro-V line, Ultimate 10 to try out in exchange for my opinion. On Tuesday I received a 375ml bottle of shampoo, a 375ml bottle of conditioner and a 151ml bottle of BB creme and was so excited to try it out that I put two pumps of the BB creme into my dry hair right away. First off - this stuff smells amazing! I mention every time I post a review that scent is incredibly important to me. I have a sensitivity to it, and if it's really strong I get headaches and if it's really bad, my lungs burn. As soon as the BB creme came out of the tube, there was a very pleasant aroma, light, flowery and not overpowering. My hair is pretty long, so I used two pumps, one on each side and worked it into my hair. The creme is not greasy and worked into my hair well, and I didn't feel the need to go wash my hands after. There was really no effect right away, but when I ran my hand through my hair about five minutes later it already felt softer, smoother and there were no tangles. What I said earlier about my hair tangling was no exaggeration - my hair really does tangle constantly. That I could still run my fingers through my hair was a good sign. The fragrance also lingers - I got to smell it every time I moved my head. By the time I went to bed I was really, really surprised... no tangles! You have no idea how happy that made me. I cannot remember the last time I was able to run my fingers through my hair without encountering a rat's nest. This BB creme is truly amazing! This morning I washed and conditioned before using the BB creme. The shampoo lathered well and I did not have to use a whole lot - less than the size of a quarter. The scent is very light, as was the conditioner, which is good, because when every product you use smells strong, it's just too much. The shampoo rinsed out easily and my hair felt pretty good prior to conditioning. I used a dollop a little bigger than a quarter of the conditioner and worked it into my hair, leaving it in while I showered. Being able to use just a little is really important - I have long hair and some types of product need way too much to be effective at all. I don't want to go broke making my hair manageable. When I rinsed, I am sad to say that I did have considerable hair loss. Unfortunately this happens with 99% of all conditioners I use. It rinsed out very well with minimal effort and felt really soft, even at this stage. I towel-dried my hair, applied 2 pumps of the BB creme and brushed out my hair. Usually I do not brush my hair when wet - first off, it's nearly impossible thanks to the tangles and secondly, I lose so much hair that I don't want to start my day off in tears. This morning my hair was easily brushed. The hair loss was less than usual, but still there. All day my hair felt so soft, silky and clean. I absolutely loved it. On my drive home I did the ultimate tangle test - I drove with my windows down. Just to put this in perspective for you, when I do this, I usually have to tear my hair into sections and brush it out that way - it's pretty much knitted itself into a really, really ugly hat. That did not happen today. I came home and ran my fingers through my hair. A few tangles, but OMG, if nothing else, this feeling is worth the price. All told - my verdict is that this system is pretty amazing. For people who don't have the hair fall issue, this is definitely for you. I'm going to try using just the shampoo and creme and maybe if I skip the conditioner I can still use this product. The BB creme, however, is the best product I've ever used. This is something I would definitely recommend to everyone and it's going to be a regular in my hair care routine from now on. You can't really see much difference in the top before/after pictures, but in the bottom close-up, I think you can tell how dull my hair looks before, shiny and smoother after. Remember, these afters were taken after a full day of work and a drive home with the windows down - without brushing. Just so you know - Pantene Pro-V Ultimate 10 is a new line of hair care products formulated to give you these ten benefits in one bottle: Repair for Rough Hair, Strength Against Damage, Silky Softness, Brilliant Shine, Smoothing, Moisture, Frizz Control, Heat Protection, Manageability, Tamed Flyaways Get your $2.00 off Pantene products coupon by clicking here. Being a BzzAgent definitely has it's perks! I got an email about the new Pantene Ultimate 10 BB Creme campaign and got over to the site to fill out my survey as quickly as my little fingers would take me! I was so excited to get a chance to try their new line. I have used Pantene in the past, but these last few years I've been using Clear Scalp Therapy, since I found that I have less hair falling after a wash. However, I love new products and was thrilled to get the "You're In!" email from BzzAgent! I was expecting sample sizes of the shampoo, conditioner and BB creme and some coupons. When I grabbed the box out of the mailbox, I was a little surprised at the weight of it - it was pretty heavy. I thought maybe they'd sent a few samples of each instead of just one. Imagine my surprise and joy when I opened the box and saw three full-sized bottles! Yay! I am so excited to try this out, especially the BB creme, I've never tried anything like that for my hair before. Sometimes they also send digital coupons we can pass on, but I regret to announce that that was not the case this time. In fact, all I got was one coupon for each item! That's a little unusual, but there you have it. I tried to find you some coupons or free samples online and came up pretty empty on that hand also - I think this product is so new there just isn't anything out there yet. I did find this page, if you click the link you'll be taken to a page where you can print some coupons - there are some for $1.00 off Pantene shampoo and $2.00 off any two products. Right after I posted this I checked the BzzAgent website - they are offering digital $2.00 off coupons - click here to get yours. There's my BzzKit... I'll be testing out these products this week and let you know my verdict this weekend - along with before and after pictures of my hair! In the meantime, if you want a campaign of your own, head over to BzzAgent and become one yourself! If you want a little more info about how being a BzzAgent works, read my quick post on it here. Make sure you head over to Pantene and check out all the great products they have for your hair and don't forget to print out some coupons at P&G and SmartSource to get you started. Yesterday I posted about the sample pack I got from P&G through WagJag. I decided to start with last night's dishes and the Cascade Platinum Pacs sample. I usually use the Finish Powerball Tabs in my dishwasher. Yesterday I decided to dive right in and give these a trial by fire, since we had pasta for dinner and the sauce tends to get all over the place and there are times when I have to re-wash dishes after they've come out of the dishwasher. Did I mention that I am not a pre-rinser or pre-soaker? I'm not. I toss them in there at the end of the day and hope for the best. According to Cascade's website, here is a description of this product: I received the 'Fresh Burst' Scent. I sniffed the pac and it did smell pretty fresh. Not overbearing and perfumey, just nice. I popped it in with no pre-wash and let the little dishwasher elves work their magic. I got home from work today and peeked into the dishwasher to see if there was any difference from what I usually see. You know what? There was! I was truly surprised to see a few differences from what I normally get. First off, it was so shiny inside my dishwasher. I guess this stuff works really well on stainless steel... I kinda want to smear it all over the outside of my appliances to see if I can get them that shiny on the outside! Secondly, I did not have to pick one speck of dried, crusty food off of any utensil, dish or pan. That was a pleasant change. I saved the best for last: There was no gross film on the bottom of my glasses! Every bloody time I empty the dishwasher there's a little dried pool of yuck on the bottom of each and every glass that was sitting in my top rack. Every one. So annoying and gross and sometimes I have to re-wash them because there is too much to clean off with a paper towel. That did not happen with this load. I don't know if that was a fluke (I'm glad they sent me two sample pacs, tonight I'll use the second and see if I get the same result), but this stuff really, really seems to work! Just to be fair and impartial, I usually try to post something I didn't like, but I can't think of one thing. I was really, really pleased with the results and will absolutely be switching from my usual brand to the Cascade Platinum.
